How to Identify & Cope with Hearing Loss

March 9, 2016

Is there a history of hearing loss in your family? Do you watch movies too loudly in order to feel like you are there? Do you jam out to the classics at maximum volume? If so, are you feeling like maybe your hearing is beginning to slip away from you? Don’t worry! Here are some easy steps for you to follow in order to get to the bottom of this hearing mystery and what you can do to deal with your situation.

Step 1: Assess Your Situation

If you think that you are experiencing hearing loss, make sure to pay extra attention to the interactions you are having. If you find that people sound like they are mumbling when they speak to you, if you have to ask people to repeat themselves often, or you find it almost tiring to listen to conversations because you have to concentrate to hear, then you may want to look into your hearing more.

You can take our online hearing quiz to identify whether or not you need to schedule a hearing assessment.

Step 2: Visit Your Registered Hearing Aid Practitioner

After you’ve assessed your situation and discovered that there may be an issue with your hearing capabilities, you should book an appointment with a Registered Hearing Aid Practitioner. They will be able to tell you if you do indeed have hearing issues and if so, what the next steps should be. There are many new advancements in the field of hearing assistance and a Registered Hearing Aid Practitioner will be able to help you find a way to cope with and potentially improve your hearing problems.

Step 3: How to Cope with Hearing Loss

You are not alone in your hearing loss issues! It is difficult at any age to discover you have hearing problems, and having a good support group can make a world of difference. There are many support groups that meet around the world to help each other deal with hearing loss and feel like they are not alone in the struggle.

At the beginning of your journey with this recent discovery, it is important to notify friends and family. Let them know the current challenges that you are facing so that they are able to offer the help and support you need.

There are plenty of new technologies, such as phone services, television captions, and cochlear implants, that can help you to improve and/or cope with your hearing loss. These technologies are all in place to help you live your everyday life in a comfortable way.

Pro Tip: A positive mindset is the best coping mechanism!

Step 4: Don’t Be Ashamed!

There is no reason to feel ashamed of your newly discovered trait; it will be okay! There are many people who, like yourself, are dealing with hearing loss, living happy and healthy lives.
