Hearing loss is an interesting thing to experience. For the most part, hearing loss is gradual and, because you can’t see the damage, many people go years before they get a hearing assessment. Unfortunately, there are all kinds of great things and experiences that people miss out on when they can’t hear, so we’ve created a list of things to do once you have your new hearing aids!
Check out a comedy show
People who have experienced hearing loss can often feel isolated; everyone’s laughing and you missed the joke! Now that you have your new hearing aids, make plans with friends to catch a comedy show and get ready to laugh. Calgary is home to several comedy clubs and each June the city hosts the Funnyfest Calgary Comedy Festival.
Visit the bird sanctuary
People with new hearing aids are often surprised at all of the small sounds that they were missing. The experience of life is in the details, so head to the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary and listen to the rustle of leaves and the twittering of birds overhead.
Experience live music - or a musical!
Head out to one of Calgary’s summer festivals or music venues and take in some live music. Pay attention to the subtle basslines and nuances in instruments that you may not have noticed in your pre-hearing aid days. Disney's The Lion King is in Calgary at the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorum until September 6th and it’s a great opportunity to test out your new hearing abilities.
Go to the big game
One of the best reasons to head out to the big game is the atmosphere at the stadium. Whether you’re cheering on the Stampeders, the Calgary Flames, or your favourite amateur team, get ready for an exciting time full of cheering and banter with your fellow sports fans.
Head to the amusement park
Amusement parks are truly a roller coaster ride for the senses with bright lights, delicious smells and the sounds of laughter (and screams) filling the air. Take the family to Calaway Park just outside of Calgary and get ready for a great time!
