Top 5 Jobs That Rely On Hearing Health

December 21, 2015

There are obvious reasons as to why hearing is important in the workplace, such as the ability to hear and understand job communication or to identify sounds like an emergency alarm. Many occupations rely heavily on exceptional hearing capabilities, for reasons ranging from enjoyment to safety. Hearing loss can greatly affect job performance, and it is in everyone’s best interest that auditory assessments in the workplace are taken seriously.

Factory or Trades Jobs

Regular hearing tests are mandatory in most factory and trades occupations, and for good reason. The ability to hear machinery, equipment, and a co-worker screaming “MOVE OUT OF THE WAY”, could save your life. Accidents happen every day in the workplace and the safety of employees is largely dependent on one’s hearing.

Musical Jobs

We use our ears to enjoy a rock CD or a country music festival, and it makes perfect sense that the people that made those sounds rely on their ears to create it. Whether it is a singer listening to match a melody or a producer hearing the right combination of instruments, music would not be as enjoyable for us without the top-notch hearing of those musicians.

Emergency Services

The house is on fire and you are trapped in the bedroom. The firefighter that is searching the house for you needs to have amazing hearing to be able to hear you calling for help amongst the chaos. We rely on the services of firefighters, police, and paramedics to keep us safe, and they rely on their hearing to help them to understand and deal with each situation.

Pilots and Drivers

Airplane pilots and bus or truck drivers, require minimum hearing levels in order to become employed. Airplane pilots and bus drivers take the lives of large groups of people into their hands when they get in the driver’s seat, and must have the ability to clearly hear what is going on around them. Truck drivers also rely on their hearing for the safety of the public, as one wrong turn in a heavy truck could cause incredible damage. The ability to listen for oncoming cars or emergency vehicles allows drivers to react before they can even see what is coming.

Military

Auditory assessments are requirements of military assignment, and can determine whether or not an individual is fit for duty. The hearing capacity to receive and follow orders is imperative for military personnel, and lives often depend on it.

Many professions rely on the sense of sound in order to be successful and safe. Whether you are working in a busy Calgary office or embarking on a new career in the trades, regular hearing assessments can help ensure your hearing health in the long-term. Through hearing assessments, our Calgary hearing clinic can address any problems before they get too bad, offering up custom hearing protection solutions like ear plugs, through to hearing solutions like modern hearing aids.
